I am ashamed to be writing this review so many months after receiving the wonderful and timely advice from Alexander Martin, Counsellor with Money Mentors, Calgary, Alberta. I contacted him after carefully reviewing their website, back in November of 2024, and he graciously and extremely patiently explained the various aspects of handling my personal debt.I was so ashamed for allowing myself to fall into this trap of credit card debt. I should have known better. And for that reason, I was adamant that I needed to pay off the debt myself. I was not prepared to forgive myself for the fact that had I not been diagnosed with 3 types of cancer in 2016 and forced to quit work, I would have been able to meet my own commitments, but I chose to remain angry, lonely, and growing further in debt with increasing interest fees monthly. I was 75, and if I could just get a part time job... but after a whole year of applications and job fairs, that was not to be.Alexander was so kind; he explained the facts, and how so many Canadians fall into this trap annually, whether through illness, bad choices, job loss, or whatever other circumstance. He eased my guilt, and allowed me to see the light again. While Money Mentors does not handle the particular solution to my own problem, he was the guiding light on my journey towards the rest of my life and freedom. I did not bite the bullet finally until August of 2025, by the time I selected a Trustee to work with, but I am now well on my way. Thank you Alexander; I could not have done it without you!Barbara

Money Mentors rescued me from a debt problem I could never seem to overcome. After years of best intentions, trying to be responsible, borrowing from one source to pay another, and then losing my job, it became impossible to just get by another month. The stress and anxiety were bringing me down, and worse, bringing my wife down with me. I feared it would feel like defeat, and an embarrassment, to reach out for help, but I could not have been more wrong.I reached out to Money Mentors. We met with Alexander Martin who guided us through our options and setting up my OPD program. Alex was fantastic – empathetic, patient, kind, informative and thorough. For the first time in years it felt like there was light at the end of the tunnel. The strain and stress on our immediate lives changed almost overnight.It has taken some time, but the debt is now cleared. My responsibilities to creditors have been met, which was important to me personally. My wife and I communicate better about finances and budgeting. I was drowning in debt—there was so much of it. The calls from creditors didn't stop. My bank was no help.I contacted Money Mentors to inquire about the OPD program and their advice. I was prepared to dedicate myself to clearing my debts. I was ready to cut up my credit cards. My counselor and I worked through some homework before we created my payback schedule. Since I was determined to pay off this personal debt on my own, I made large monthly payments. The phone calls from creditors stopped, which was a relief.Despite some difficult months, I am debt free after 56 months! It has not sunk in yet. My perspective has changed from one of spending and worrying about it later to one of saving and planning. Though I still worry about going back into debt, I can always turn to the Money Mentors website for helpful guidance.

If you are in debt and having trouble seeing a way out I can't recommend Money Mentors enough. Right from the start I never felt judged. Everyone was understanding and helpful. While on the program they were very understanding of the few times I did have to make a payment late or split a payment over a few months. I just finished the OPD program and I honestly don't know how I would have made it out of my debt otherwise. Thank you Sheri for your help!

Thank you so much Alexander!!! The customer service I received was exceptional. I was given two (2) option to pay off my debt without declaring bankruptcy. I did not want to go into bankruptcy. I was given details about both options. At the end of my conversation with the counsellor at Money Mentors I felt relieve and knew I was more than capable of handling my debt in a timely and efficient manner. To say Money Mentors counsellor put me at ease is putting it mildly. I am so glad I made the call for help. Even though I have a budget made out I am going to take the free courses they offer online as I never want to be in this position again. Thank you so much to the Counsellor and all staff for making this incredible outcome possible. Knowing I don't have to go into bankruptcy, lifted my spirits immensely. Would recommend to anyone that is drowning in debt and unsure what to do. I was incredibly foolish and irresponsible with my finances, and it was catching up to me. Finally I worked up the courage to make an appointment and go.I never in my life thought I would pay back my debts, have collection calls stop - but sure enough the orderly payments of debt program helped me get there. And that monthly payment was a constant reminder to never let myself be so frivolous with my credit again.

Best way to get out of debt. It isn't a get out of jail free card. You pay your debts off with reduced interest making it easier to get back on track. Best of all is you get a financial education to set you up for success once your caught up.

Was initially hopeful after contacting this company to help straighten up some debt. While setting up for an OPD, the advisor I talked to told me to ignore all my current credit card payments and to stop answering calls from the collection agency in preparation for the debt that was going to be collected. This ended up being bad advice because the OPD fell through before I could set it up and now I am in an even worse situation than before with my interest payments unpaid and the collection agency even angrier than before. You would think that a money mentoring program would have enough insight to anticipate complications down the road and would not recommend something so irresponsible to a person in financial distress.Once the OPD fell through, the advisor was gone. They left me hanging without a single word of advice. I felt completely abandoned by money mentors. I would not recommend reaching out to them for help.

Finished up my OPD program last year with Money Mentors. Yes, they helped me get out of debt, which was great. But they also found a crafty way to back out of paying back several thousand dollars in fees.I was told at the start I had to finish a course within the first year of the program to qualify for a monthly fee refund, and I was reminded a couple times within that first year to complete it. Fast forward several years, I get to the end of my OPD program to find out that they're not going to give me a single penny of those fees, because there were other courses that I missed. Yes, those courses were in my initial paperwork, but I suppose I was expected to remember every little detail of the fine print for up to 3 years after I signed the paperwork. I don't think it's a coincidence that the reminders stopped after the first year.The person I met with to finalize the OPD said that I could finish the missed courses and make an appeal to management to get the fees refunded. I did exactly that, and all I got in return was a condescending reply from some "lead counsellor". Instead of simply saying that they were still unwilling to refund the fees, she decided to spend the entirety of the email pointing out how wrong I was. I guess she figured that they had all my money, and I had signed all of the final paperwork, so decorum didn't matter anymore?This whole experience could have easily been five stars...but for them to dangle that carrot only to take it away at the very end was quite disheartening.

Thought we were going to get some resolution to our debt. Jumped through all the hoops and it took me 5 months to have everything including income up to where Money Mentors instructed. Returned with great expectations only to be told we needed to make more money before they would help. We finally ended up at BNA debt solutions . They solved our problem and gave us options.

Horrible experience. The women I met with was not only late, but both rude and condescending; and in short told me I would apparently be wasting my time with them because at the time she claimed it would take at least ten years with them and they'd make money off of me and wouldn't be paid off. No options or programs were mentioned just that I apparently had to pay them. Kind of threw me off since they claim to be a non-profit and this all was stated after only a few minutes based on assumptions and estimates with no verification of any kind before hand. All in all very shifty and wasn't the only awkward conversation/experience I've had with them (had no debts a few years ago so no real need back then) and definitely wouldn't recommend. There are other companies/resources out there with better reputations.

I took a friend here today. They were intensely helpful given the short window of time we had. Paula was able to zero in on the problem areas and offered a number of solutions. Of course she can't spend all day with us. It wasn't a social visit. Some people might be offended by that. I was happy because my time is valuable also. I will be recommending Money Mentors to more people who find themselves having financial difficulties.
