What to do when someone steals your identity

If you are, or suspected to be, a victim of identity theft or fraud and are wondering what to do when someone steals your identity, it is advised by the Government of Canada to file a report with local authorities and/or to follow the steps below:

  1. Contact your local police force and file a report.
  2. Contact your bank/financial institution and credit card company.
  3. Contact the two national credit bureaus and place a fraud alert on your credit reports.

  4. Always report identity theft and fraud. Contact the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
