Balancing Business and Life: Why Connection Matters

Self-employment is not for the weak of heart! Small business owners wear all the hats – accounting, sales, marketing, HR, IT, and everything in between. This can feel overwhelming and exhausting, and it can be quite isolating because you have no team, colleagues, or business partners.
The question is, how do we achieve our business goals and still have enough energy for the rest of our lives? This is a challenge, as most of us know some successful business owners who focus most of their time and energy on their business, often at the cost of our relationships and our health, including mental health.
Studies have shown a positive correlation between positive relationships and health. So, instead of overhauling your whole life and business, consider adding more opportunities for socialization.
This could look like a weekly business coffee with another small business owner. You can share your triumphs and losses over a cup of joe.
Perhaps you and your spouse/partner engage in a date night (or day). This can keep you connected to your most important support system.
Consider grabbing a friend and running errands together. You can chat up a storm while dealing with the mundane tasks of being human.
Or maybe you create a weekly or bi-weekly virtual call with a few friends or business owners to check in.
Remember, we (humans) are pack animals. We are social creatures, and we need to fill that cup up regularly. Social time not only helps you put life into perspective, it has an actual positive benefit for your health.
