Job Title: Financial Counsellor

Reports to: Counselling Manager

Job Overview: This role focuses on supporting consumers in Alberta to address their credit and debt challenges through one-on-one counselling and coaching. The Financial Counsellor will build a strong rapport, conduct a thorough financial assessment, and make recommendations for the consumer to achieve their goal. The Financial Counsellor will also refer to appropriate services in the community and online education delivered by Money Mentors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Rapport Building
    • Establish a trusting and safe environment for consumers to share their experiences.
    • Connect with consumers using active listening and empathy.
    • Ask questions that allow the consumer to explore options.
  • Assessment
    • Conduct a financial assessment for each consumer using income, assets, liabilities, expenses, and debts.
    • Explore Orderly Payment of Debt as an option to resolve debt issues.
    • Develop a meaningful and realistic budget with consumers, where applicable.
  • Make Recommendations
    • Discuss relevant options available to a consumer based on their needs and finances.
    • Support client to strategize and problem solve their unique financial concerns
    • Encourage consumers where appropriate, to become debt-free with the Orderly Payment of Debt program.
    • Refer consumers to services (e.g. LIT) when OPD is not the right solution.
  • Administration
    • Complete objective and thorough notes on every consumer appointment.
    • For OPD-eligible consumers, complete the file and hand it off to Client Services
    • Attend team meetings and contribute to discussion through problem solving and information sharing with colleagues.

Qualifications:

  • Education: diploma or degree.
  • Experience: 3 years+ in the financial ecosystem or related field
  • Skills and Competencies:
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills
    • Able to navigate various computer systems with ease
    • Ability to influence and motivate consumers into action
    • Strong focus on delivering an excellent client experience
    • Comfortable with key performance indicators

Requirements of the Role (if applicable):

  • Accredited Financial Counsellor certification within 18 months
